Smile aesthetics
What makes you smile?
The elements that contribute to the beauty of the smile are the teeth (their position and their anatomy), the gums (contour, thickness, etc.) and the lips (the way they emerge from the teeth when you smile).
To form an aesthetic smile, the teeth must have satisfactory proportions to each other and there must be a harmonious relationship between the teeth, the gums and the face.
Factors that influence the aesthetics of the smile
Certain basic rules influence the beauty of a smile, in a universal way.

The symmetry of the smile
In relation to the central axis of the face and the symmetry of the two central incisors in size, length and shape.

Horizontal alignment
Collars of the central incisors and the incisal plane with the horizontal line between the pupils of the eyes.

Smile line
The edge of the top teeth follows the curve of the lower lip when you smile.
Gum line
The line that connects the highest points of the upper teeth should be symmetrical on both sides of the mouth and follow the line of the upper lip.

Contact areas
(places where adjacent teeth touch)
Ideally, the length of these areas shortens from front to back (the longest contact area between the central incisors).

Gum health
The gum tissue should have a pale pink color and a firm texture without swelling or bleeding. The taste buds must completely fill the gap between the teeth to avoid the "black triangle" effect.
Rate your smile
To analyze your smile, stand in front of a mirror, smile, and check the following :
- Are your teeth bright white or are they a little yellow, stained or stained ?
- Are there spaces between some of your teeth? Are you missing one or more teeth ?
- Do you have teeth that are crooked, uneven, misaligned ?
- Do the edges of your upper teeth follow the curvature of your lower lip when you smile ?
- Do you have teeth that look too small or too big ?
- Do some teeth seem too long or too short compared to others ?
- Are your teeth angled ?
- Is the midline between your two front teeth centered in relation to your face and nose ?
- Are your canines too long or too sharp ?
- Do you grind your teeth or have chipped or worn teeth ?
- Do you have a “gummy” smile - showing too much gum tissue ?
- Are your gums even and symmetrical or irregularly shaped - high on some teeth and low on others ?
- Are your gums showing more of your teeth than before (gum recession) or appearing red or swollen ?
- Do you have gray, black or silver fillings on your teeth ?
- Do you have old crowns that show a gray line on the gum line or look unnatural ?
