BRUXISME ET PLAQUE OCCLUSALE

General dentistry

What is bruxism?

Bruxism, or bruxomania, is the mania, often unconscious and involuntary, of grinding and / or clenching your teeth. There are 2 types of bruxism: static bruxism or teeth clenching without movement (" clenching ") and dynamic bruxism which consists of grinding of teeth by friction, accompanied by lateral displacement of the teeth (" grinding ").

It is estimated that 8% of adults suffer from bruxism and that more than 14% of children grind their teeth a few times a week.

When does bruxism manifest?

This phenomenon usually occurs during sleep, when the person is unconscious. However, we can also observe this habit during periods of wakefulness, especially during activities requiring a certain concentration (precision work, driving ...). You can be chronically prone to bruxism, but also episodically and temporarily. This behavior can lead to several dental problems, depending on its frequency, intensity and underlying causes.

The causes

The causes of this disorder can be numerous, but science is still far from having solved this mystery. One thing is certain, anxiety, anxiety, stress and hyperactivity are the triggers or amplifiers of bruxism. Here are other factors contributing to bruxism :

  • Problems related to dental malocclusion (poor relationship between teeth in occlusion)
  • Drug and / or alcohol use
  • Smoking (before sleeping)
  • Certain trauma related to an accident
  • Position for sleeping, especially on the back

Diagnostic of bruxism

Despite this evidence, some patients seem surprised and even categorically deny that they have a problem with bruxism. But more serious consequences can arise if the problem is not taken care of :

  • Cracks and fractures of the teeth.
  • Wear and breakage of restorations already in place (ceramic crowns, fillings, etc.).
  • Mobility of teeth, loosening, bone loss.
  • Loss of one or more teeth.
  • Permanent damage to the joints and muscles of the jaw.

What is an occlusal plate

Occurring especially during sleep, when the person is not in control and aware of his movements, the treatment of bruxism is mainly based on the installation of an occlusal plate. This protective gutter made of semi-rigid acrylic can be worn day or night depending on the case. It is attached to the chewing surface of the teeth, top or bottom, preventing them from touching each other. The teeth are thus protected against wear due to friction. In addition, this device largely absorbs the pressure exerted on the joints and on the muscles of the jaws providing immediate relief from the pain caused by bruxism.
