Gum graft

General dentistry

What is a gum graft?

A gum graft is a surgical procedure that allows the dentist to correct the existing loosening by adding gum to cover the exposed root of the tooth, and thus prevent any future loosening. Gum transplantation is often indicated when the teeth have receding gums or a lack of attached gum tissue. It is a simple and efficient process carried out in a dental clinic.

Why have a gum transplant ?

The gum line covers the root of the teeth and the alveolar bone that holds them in the jawbone. Gum transplantation is used for :

  • Correct and stop the progression of gum recession
  • Cover the bare root of the tooth which is more vulnerable to tooth decay and hypersensitivity
  • Improve the aesthetics of the smile especially when it concerns the anterior teeth. The problems of loosening and recession, make the teeth appear longer and more spaced.

What causes gum loss?

There are several factors that cause gum loss :

  • Predisposing factors (shape of the alveolar bone, dental malposition, thin gum, age, etc.)
  • Excessive and inadequate brushing
  • Bruxism (grinding and clenching of teeth)
  • Poorly executed orthodontic treatment
  • Wrong crowns, veneers, amalgam or composite restorations
  • Gingivitis and periodontitis problems

At Anjou Center Dentaire d'Urgence, we assess each situation in relation to the size of the recession and its severity. If you think you are suffering from gum loss, do not hesitate to consult us.

Types of gum transplant

Two types of transplant exist: autogenous and allogenic . The goal of any gum graft is to thicken the attached gum tissue and, if possible, cover the exposed root of the tooth in question. At Anjou Center Dentaire d'Urgence , we carry out both types of intervention. During your consultation, your dentist will assess which procedure is best for you.

AUTOGENIC (graft from patient)
ALLOGENE (graft from a donor)

After the transplant

After your surgery, the recovery period is usually short. Our patients frequently tell us that they feel little or no pain. If you may experience any slight discomfort or tenderness at the site, a prescription will be given to you as needed. We invite you to consult our document concerning post-operative advice following a gum graft in the advice area for more details.
