Periodontal disease
Has your hygienist or dentist ever told you that your gum is bleeding or that you have gingivitis? Yes, possibly. You think it's normal for your gum to be tender and bleed easily, that's how it is in your family. Think again. It is never normal for a gum to bleed. Never. Periodontal disease is a condition of the structures that surround the tooth, that is, the gum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.
A slow process
Periodontal disease does not happen overnight. Usually diagnosed as a chronic disease with a slow process, it can happen that its process is aggressive. Several factors can contribute to its onset and development.
Periodontal disease
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is a very common oral manifestation that is easily detected by clear signs such as: bleeding, redness and edema (inflammation). Several types of gingivitis exist. Despite the fact that the most common type of gingivitis is induced by biofilm, some types can be caused, for example, by infections, viruses, the hormonal system, some drugs, etc.
As biofilm-induced gingivitis generally represents the first stage of periodontal disease and is influenced by the quality of our personal dental hygiene , we will develop more in this segment.
Periodontal disease
GINGIVAL RECESSION
The recession is in fact the gum which retracts towards the apex of the tooth thus leaving bare part of the root. Other factors can also cause recession, such as poor brushing technique and excessive occlusal forces. Note that this type of pathology often leads to dentinal sensitivity (the sensation of pain associated with hot and cold) that many patients experience.
Periodontal disease
Periodontitis
Periodontitis refers to “paro” which means around and “odontitis” which refers to teeth. This condition unfortunately affects many people since it is estimated that about one in two Americans over the age of 30 has some form of periodontal disease according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention report published in August 2012.
Periodontitis is therefore a very worrying pathology for dental professionals and is often recognized by those around them by the appearance of very long teeth and the associated bad breath. Periodontitis is the most serious and irreversible form of periodontal disease while gingivitis is its mild and reversible form.
